Summary:
In the scrapped third of the animatic, Zack falls into a mysterious city and falls from the sky, while trying to get his footing, the big eye aka the Eye of Judgment, attempts to stop Zack by using building signs to stop him due to its ability to control the city's environment. Zack gets away with his life only to fall into the ground with a broken arm and ribs, and the echoing crowd surrounds him while the Eye stares him down.
Zack begins to crack and then laughs out of embarrassment to embrace his vulnerability to feel a sense of joy as that is one of the core themes this film holds which is about "embracing your vulnerability".
My Roles: - Director, Original Creator, Character Designer, Cinematography, 2D Background Artist, Editing, Sound and Screenplay.
The Production:
I treated the animatic to be a sort of live-action by adding blurred frames within sequences like Zack running into the echoed crowd or attacking a door to add a sense of motion and realism within the scene.
During the pre-production stage of Off the Rails, I followed the screenplay I wrote and adapted into storyboards and into an animatic which is longer than the film's final version.
Originally, I wanted to adapt the entirety of the animatic, however, I had no choice but to restrict myself due to the submission deadline being so close, so sacrificing the last act was a hard choice to make as a director.
The third act's sequence was influenced by the first trailer of "Across the Spider-verse" first trailer where Miles Morales falls into Mumbahatten and falls around its inhabitants before stabilising himself with a web swing. ( Before Spider-Man 2099 comes and kicks his but).
